Unveiling SynthID Detector: Google's New Tool for AI Content Transparency

Google announced several new features and updates related to artificial intelligence (AI) during its annual developer conference Google I/O 2025. Amidst these announcements, the tech company also introduced a new tool called SynthID Detector, which aims to increase the transparency of content generated by AI. The tool is currently in the testing phase and can identify audio, video, image and text content created with the help of Google's AI models.

What is SynthID Detector : - Google first introduced SynthID technology in 2023, which adds an invisible watermark to any content. This watermark cannot be removed or changed. In 2024, Google open-sourced this text watermarking technology so that developers and businesses can benefit from it.  Now in 2025, the company has started testing a verification portal called SynthID Detector, through which anyone can check whether a content is created by a human or AI.

How does it work : - According to Google, this portal is quite simple. Users can upload media that they suspect has been created by AI. SynthID Detector then scans that media and identifies the invisible watermark present in it. If the watermark is found, it is also shown which part of the content is generated by AI.

Limitations and utility : - It is worth noting that this tool can only identify content created by Google's AI tools (such as Gemini). It does not work on content created by AI models of other companies.

Google says that this technology works without compromising content quality and it is not possible to remove the watermark, so that it can help protect against problems like misinformation and deepfakes.
