Signal has launched a new version of its desktop app for Windows 11 users that prevents Microsoft's controversial Recall feature from taking screenshots of end-to-end encrypted chats. The new update includes a feature called Screen Security, which is enabled by default. This means that the Recall feature available on Copilot+ PC will not see anything if it tries to take a screenshot of Signal chats.
"Microsoft has made many changes over the past year, but the new Recall feature still puts content visible in apps that prioritize privacy, like Signal," Signal developer Joshua Lund said in a blog post on Wednesday, May 21.
"Microsoft left us with no other choice, so we're adding an additional security layer by default for Signal desktop on Windows 11, even if it compromises some usability," he added.
What is Microsoft Recall feature : - Recall is an AI-based feature that takes a screenshot of the user's screen every few seconds and saves it in a searchable database. Its purpose is that users can use these pictures to remember a website, email or conversation later.
However, it faced heavy criticism as soon as it was launched and Microsoft had to postpone it twice. Now this feature is an opt-in option and includes features like data encryption and sensitive content filter, but still Signal is not satisfied with it.
How does it work : - This Screen Security feature of Signal in Windows 11 is based on Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, the same technology that prevents screenshots of videos from platforms like Netflix.
Microsoft's developer guide also states that if an app uses DRM, its content will not be visible from Recall or any other screenshot app. That's why this method of Signal does not technically violate any rule.
